Depict Evaluation
Task:
Our task was as a team to create a ninety second short film for a short film competition called 'Depict!'.We were given just over a week to film our video and audio footage , to simplify filming we decided to make our short film a silent film which therefore meant we had less to worry about.
Idea/Planning/Changes
Throughout the conceptual phase of our short film we went through many different renditions of the story, originally being black and white with the only color on show being red to create a stylized effect. This would later change into being a simply shot film with no filter, Instead of the focus being on a clown it was first planned to be a mime however, while filming we came across a few problems with the costume of the mime actor. The makeup process took far too long and getting into the costume took a lengthy amount of time. We overcame this problem just by changing the costume to a jumpsuit and wig.
The first set of storyboards also featured the lead being stuck in a box which was meant to be a metaphor of purgatory which comes from Catholic faith about a state after death which would supposedly cleanse you of your sins so you become fit for heaven.
This idea was deemed to outgoing and complex for the time constraints and budget issues , some of this original concept can still be found just in a much more simple form, such as the lead being stuck in a corridor which is the replacement for the box, eventually the lead breaks free from the corridor and escapes which can in a way be seen as her escaping purgatory and entering the afterlife.
Each member of our production team contributed with Channy replacing myself as the lead while Nathan and Jody acted as cameramen, I mostly worked on the concept of the short film and the editing due to me being confident in using Premier Pro.
Unfortunately our film was only at 60 seconds in length which didn't meet the requirement of the film being 90 seconds.
My personal 2 Favourite aspects of 'Mime Games':
My two favourite aspects didn't actually make the final cut.
However, I enjoy the final shot where the lead character breaks the fourth wall and not only waves goodbye to the audience but also the corridor she was trapped in.
I also like the moment where the clown taps upon the camera.
If I could change anything about the project it would be to revert the original plan ,film in a more convenient place and to personally oversee the camera work due to the large majority of our shots not even being in focus.
Overall I greatly enjoyed this project, my favourite part was working in a team and actually create a finished product even though I am not particularly happy with the final piece.
